"She is surely the worst prime minister in British political history, rivaled only by her predecessor. The only thing to say in her favour is that she will very soon lose that title to her successor, given the rabble lining up to pitch for her job."

Have to say I agree I have no sympathy for incompetence or the stupidly obstinate. However its more likely that like Thatcher with the Falklands war, this was more by design than incompetence. Is there more at work here than we are seeing or is she really that vain that she cant see the writing on the wall. However, If Thatcher didn't design the events that led to the Falklands or May the events that led to the position the UK now finds itself in then we really only have incompetence to consider.

Mayhems last roll of the dice or a stitch up?

29th March 2017 and Theresa May triggered Article 50.

Its taken just over 2 years while she went off and negotiated what she thought Brexit was. Unfortunately it wasn't what all the other MP's, including MP's from her own party, thought Brexit was.

Its always the problem with vague sound bites like Brexit means Brexit ....it was always open to interpretation. It appealed to everyone because everyone thought they knew what it meant but it actually meant nothing to everyone, because its vagueness left it, a catch 22 almost.  But everyone still quotes it as if what their interpretation of it, is the right one.

Fast forward to tonight, the clock is running down the UK has until 12th April 2019 to propose a plan acceptable by all 27 members of the EU or it leaves with No Deal.

Mayhem has 10 Days to pull a rabbit out of a hat.

Tonight May decides to "take action" and offers to sit down with the leader of the opposition.

"I'm offering to sit down with the Leader of the Opposition to try to agree a plan that we would both stick to, to ensure that we leave the European Union and that we do so with a deal.

Before we move on lets be clear why we are at this point.

1. May went off and negotiated on her own with very little accepted input from others.
2. Its very clear from the comments of Tory MP's that May has been nothing but intransigent, 2 Brexit Secretary's have resigned because of it. 
3. This offer of talking should have happened 18 months ago. Consensus should have been sort at the start so that whatever deal was negotiated had backing and could get through parliament.
4. While writing this I suddenly thought if the Tories wanted a fall guy to blame it doesn't come much better than May.

Soapbox opinion
Personally I think anyone sitting down to talk at this late stage needs to be very wary. There are very few avenues left and the opportunity to share the blame around a bit is high.  Is this the plan behind this last minute reaching out? A bit of slippery shoulder finger pointing?

In a nutshell

• We have 10 days until the 12th April, unless May can come up with a reason for the EU to extend.
• It would need to be a show stopping reason like another referendum or a General Election.
• There is only one deal on the table (May's deal) with the EU and they have said it wont be renegotiated.
• May's deal has already been voted down 3 times now.
• MP's have so far voted against every other proposal put before them.
• MP's have voted to avoid No Deal at all costs. (That's just advisory though and not enshrined in law)
• The EU has stated it wants to do all it can to avoid No Deal.
• However the EU has actually planned for No Deal unlike the UK who's plans are severely lacking and nowhere near complete.
• 12 April 2019 is also the deadline for informing the EU of the intention to hold MEP elections.
• Unless the UK leaves on or closely to the 12th it will be required to hold MEP elections.
• 23rd of May is when EU elections take place, 49 days time.

Lets look at possibilities

1. No Deal, its still the legal default if all else fails.
2. May's deal "The withdrawal agreement" is still the only deal on the table with the EU.
3. A long extension, UK would have to be holding a General Election or another Referendum to get such an extension and would have to take part in EU elections.
4. Revoking article 50, the UK can do this unilaterally. 
5. May could resign.
6. Other suggestions are some form of Customs union and or single market attachment. But surely if going for either of these we might as well stay in the EU. 

Soapbox opinion
I don't know where May is going with this at such a late stage, looks like nothing more than another attempt to get her deal over the line and/or dilute some of the blame away from the Tories. To me this smells of a stitch up.  Jeremy Corbyn you would be wise to be very careful, you could be being set up. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could throw her and with limited doors to walk through now, I feel the Tories are moving into damage limitation.

Dictator May creates diversion

Or maybe Division?

So Mays idea of getting people together to build consensus is to attack them.

You really couldn't make this up.

Right from the start she has been a dictator on this deal, no talks were had with anyone except maybe the DUP and the ERG.

Now she claims people wouldn't talk....she tried ...its all the others fault.

I wont allow it to go past June .....OMG Woman havnt you realised yet its not your decision. The UK is not a Dictatorship.

Could Mayhem still come out of it a winner?

What is clear from the current Brexit shambles is, Theresa May is probably going to go down as the worst PM ever.

Winston Churchill was described as Pig Headed and Theresa May certainly gets that mantle. She has forged ahead on her own Brexit deal regardless of advise from others and regardless of massive historic vote losses. In this regard she has not brought people together she has alienated and divided.  In any other point in time a PM facing such losses would have to resign, they would have no option.

Now she has the spectacle of her own party voting against a three line whip, which is almost unheard of and they are not going to be sacked for doing so. Truly unprecedented times.

However all is not lost, Churchill made massive mistakes at Gallipoli with his decision to attack Turkey on its Dardanelles coast, at Gallipoli. The ensuing battle lasted over eight months,  involved a total of about a million men on both sides, of whom nearly one half became casualties. The failed campaign led to the humiliation of the British. Churchill was dismissed from his cabinet position, excluded from the War Council, and allowed no hand in the further conduct and administration of the war.

But that was WWI, in WWII Churchill became a national hero with his rousing speeches.

Fast forward to the 80s and Thatcher another Pig Headed politician not known for taking advise, was heading for almost certain defeat in an election until (in my opinion) she engineered the Falklands war, thereby saving herself and becoming a national hero. Although in my mind the real heroes were the troops and not Thatcher. (see this link for my blog on why I feel she engineered the Falklands war)

Is May on Churchill's or Thatcher's level, probably not, shes shown herself to be far more incompetent and a Narcissistic incompetent to boot.  She is only still in power because the Tories need a fall guy for the Brexit fall out. Any other time and they would have had the knives in the back just like they did with Thatcher.

With parliament voting today against a no deal Brexit (although the default legal position is still Deal or no Deal on 29th). We could find, with the prospect of a weakened Brexit or Brexit delay some Brexiteer's could go for another vote on Mays deal on or around the 26th March. (see this link for my prediction on that one.)

Could Mayhem still come out of it a winner?  Personally I don't think so but ...

Brexiteer's see their goal slipping through their fingers and switch

Another of my Facebook posts from earlier today

1. They will vote away the only negotiating card held today, by rejecting no deal Brexit.
2. Tomorrow they will vote to extend leaving the EU. Then there will be much debate as they try and figure out what would be a valid thing to tell the EU why they want to extend, and they wont be able to agree on anything.
3. On the 26th March Mayhem will have another vote on her deal and it'll be voted through as staunch Brexiteer's see their goal slipping through their fingers and switch to accept Mayhems deal.

The only hole in my prediction is that regardless what parliament vote No Deal is the default legal position and the Tories need the DUP to support their Government.

So rock and a hard place, if you can work this one out your doing well.

UPDATE: I noticed late last night that an MP in parliament was trying to bet someone £50 that there would be another vote on Mays deal on or around the 26th of March :-D

Looks like my prediction could still be good, EU now saying UK can have a short extension if Mays deal is backed that's gonna put pressure on certain groups. Now I reckon May will put more pressure on by saying she'll resign if the deal isn't backed, that'll pile the pressure on those that don't want to risk a hard core Bexiteer getting in. All in my humble opinion of course :-D :-D
Oh I forgot to mention EU still have to agree to a tweak to the deal so it can be voted on since Bercow stopped it being voted on again without any changes. (apparently that's to do with an old law to stop PM bullying parliament by bringing things back again and again.)

Brexit: Who is focusing on their own interests?

A few facts....

• Northern Ireland voted to remain.

• May is only talking to the DUP who don't represent the majority in Northern Ireland.

• The DUP prop up the Tories shaky government which gives them power beyond their standing.

"It has been reported that Theresa May refuses to meet with Northern Ireland’s non-unionist political representatives as a group. The four political parties that requested a joint meeting – Sinn Féin, the SDLP, the Alliance, and the Green party – represent a remain opinion in Northern Ireland that delivered a strong vote for the EU in the 2016 referendum."

May is only talking to the DUP because the DUP prop up her shaky government otherwise she wouldn't give them the time of day. How many meetings has she had with other parties who more represent the feelings of the NI general public? None.

"The majority of people in Northern Ireland are looking for something quite different from what the DUP is looking for - and yet the DUP is given this platform as if it speaks for Northern Ireland."

So the whole backstop issue and all the problems that has caused appears to be because of stakes in the sand put there by the DUP. Obviously correct me if im wrong but it would seem to me that this whole issue is being caused by a minority party taking an opportunity to push their narrative because it holds the government to ransom with its votes.

Think about it, the whole of the UK is being held to ransom by the DUP.

This is no way to run a negotiation with one of the biggest trading platforms on earth.

Its clear that the ones who are focusing on their own interests rather than the interests of the people is the DUP and the Tories.

"In 2005 the UK “current budget deficit” was less that £20 billion. But then came the worldwide financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent recession. The budget deficit skyrocketed to £50 billion in 2009 and £103 billion in 2010. In the subsequent recovery the deficit has steadily declined, down to £1.9 billion in 2018."  {LINK}

So the deficit has reduced by 101.1 billion

                            But wait ....the UK debt is now over 70% more

"In 2005 the UK National Debt was less that £0.5 trillion. But then came the worldwide financial crisis of 2008 and subsequent recession. The National Debt increased rapidly and went over £1 trillion in 2011. At the end of the 2015-16 fiscal year, the National Debt went over £1.5 trillion." {LINK}

Its worth noting that its a total myth that Labour caused the financial crisis of 2008, a myth perpetuated by the Tories to good effect and people still believe it now.  Its well known that the greedy banks caused the crises but the Tories continue to promote the lie.

So UK debt when Tories took over was 1.01 Trillion

UK Debt in 2018 was 1.78 Trillion. That's 780 billion more.

May claimed that a vote for Labour would be a vote for "a coalition of Chaos" the facts are that the Tories turned out to be in chaos.

I'll just mention this.

"Corbyn's spending plans will bankrupt the country" the media screamed "its all uncosted" they claimed.

Fact Corbyn proposed to spend £250 billion on infrastructure, which in turn would create jobs, generally make things better and stimulate the economy.

What happened ....... Total melt down.

 The Tories however have increased the UK debt by £770 billion, with nothing to show for it.

May will probably win today's no confidence vote in the Conservative party. But at what cost?

I expect Mayhem will win todays no confidence vote in the Conservative party. But at what cost, what will the DUP want this time for their backing? Plus the Tories are unlikely to vote for a no confidence vote in themselves.

So where does that leave us.

May seems to have been pushing forward on a deal of her own making in some grand attempt at being the Savior of the UK and putting herself on a standing with Thatcher in the history books (Not that I hold Thatcher in that great esteem) a vanity project from the start.  It is one thing Tories are good at ...vanity.

So is she playing a very clever remain game or a very bad leave game.

Going against the mandate of the country would be a very dangerous thing to do for any PM but she was a remainer at the start.

2 years of convoluted negotiations, well wasn't 2 years because it took about a year and a half to decide what they wanted and the EU still doesn't seem to know. 3 brexit Secretary's later and we are still no nearer to starting to negotiate trade deals.

The mantra still at present is
My deal
No deal
Or no brexit

However at the start it was Brexit means Brexit.....whatever that means. Seems to mean whatever brexit I dream up.

As the house is definitely opposed to no deal that leaves only 2 so she could be playing a clever remain game. Hmmm!

Seems to me the EU keep saying tell us what you really want. By that I think they mean we don't want to know what Mayhem wants we want to know what parliament wants. All the indications are that they realise that mayhem is forging forward with what she wants so they are not prepared to negotiate any further.

A proper proposal backed by parliament I believe the EU would discuss. Personally I think Mayhem is lying when she says there is no further negotiation. Yes there is no further negotiation on her deal but a deal backed by parliament would be looked at.

As such I conclude that she's just playing a vanity game and play hero. Trying to get herself in the history books as another Thatcher, although the Tory knives soon came out for her. Corbyn's only route after such an epic fail had to be to call for a vote of no confidence. Everyone would have been putting the boot in if he diddnt, even though chances of winning were slim.

Personally I think there should be a GE as it would hand back power to the people. All parties can campaign on the detail of what they think Brexit should be or even no brexit and the people can vote on the detail.

Another referendum well what goes on the ballot paper? May's deal, no deal, remain? We already voted to leave... How many referendums should we have? Should there need to be a clear 60% majority next time? I think there should.

Nope a General Election is the best route in my humble opinion.

Update

Have to say I don't agree with Labour's stance that a no deal Brexit should be taken of the table before cross party talks. This is not the time to be taking away the only thing that might worry the EU in negotiations. Also May would agree to this if her plan was always to engineer some form of Remain, we wait and see.  I can see why its being asked for but its also going to have little impact on business now at this late stage, so keep it in the cards we are holding while we work out how to play them.

Tories ready to self destruct?

I said 2 years ago that whoever negotiates brexit would die on their own sword. The vote was too close whatever deal you negotiate it'll be wrong for nearly 50%.

I believe the only way forward now is a General election. Each party can set out what their idea of brexit is and the country can vote on it.

If Mayhem makes it through the next 3 weeks I'll be amazed.  Maybe we could even see a split in the Tories. Maybe other parties as well.

Interesting times in UK politics I wouldn't want to be a politician.

Sinn Fein could really make things interesting if they turned up to vote. What a publicity stunt that would be.

The Brexit - Choices in a nutshell, while Mayhem begs round the EU

The only thing Mayhem is going to get begging round Europe is possibly some reassurances and clarifications. That is not going to cut it in Parliament, the deal will not get through.

So we have some options and these options are based on the fact that we did have a democratic vote (don't necessarily agree with how that was run but that's another argument) and there was a small majority to leave, so respecting that decision......

1. Stop Brexit and stay in the EU, political suicide for any party, without a public vote
2. Extend article 51 time limit. With nothing else on offer pretty much a waste of time.
3. Take it back for a 2nd Referendum. Possible support growing for this due to impasse in Parliament. But where are we if the vote is the same? Right back in same position.
4. Take everything off the table and request to move forward on trade talks with no prerequisites, this is what should happen and what should have happened from the start. No deal with anything unless everything is in the deal. The problem with this is there is no time left now.
5. Crash out with No Deal. The less palatable option and everyone is running scared of it. Brexiteers say everything will be OK, Remainers say the world will come to an end. Who is right. Well no one knows as its never been done before.

The only thing I can say is you don't negotiate like this, but it is was it is and we move on from here and not from 2 years ago. I used to work in Project Management and its remarkable how solutions will be found when peoples backs are to the wall. 

Using that principle if we are to move forward with Brexit we have to take everything off the table and prepare for crashing out without a deal. We cant solve the Irish border problem. Nor will we put up a border, so let the EU solve that issue of how they check goods going into the EU ie across the Irish border.

If we think that a hard crash out Brexit is really going to be catastrophic for the country and if  Parliament stays at impasse, then we have to take it back to the country and let them decide.

Two choices in a nutshell

1. Crash out with No Deal
2. Take the Vote back to the people but the vote choices should be
1. Crash out no deal
2. Stay in EU
3. Go forward with Mayhems deal

 

Mayhem vote of no confidence

So doomed if they do doomed if they don't.

Basically if they vote Mayhem back in tonight they are supporting her deal. Maybe I'm missing something but the deal appears to be not really a deal but a progression point. Agree that, says the EU and we can move onto trade negotiations....Hmmm.

In my opinion nothing should have been negotiated or given away it should all be negotiated together. Why have we agreed to pay 40 billion odd before getting to the trade agreement table. Yes we may have commitments but NO everything should be on the table until the final agreement. The EU have played a blinder on this one.

This deal is not a deal its a part way point that its taken two years to get to. The trade deals are the hard part, how many years will that take?

So what are the options

1. Vote Mayhem back in which is basically accepting her deal. But that deal will be voted down by the house and risks Labour putting forward a no confidence vote.
2. Put someone else in, the only option here would appear to be crash out with no deal or at least threaten it.
3. Extending the date? but for what nothing is going to change.
4. Take it back for a peoples vote as the politicians are at impasse. 

Who knows what will happen but i think Mayhem will survive this vote and like a drunk bouncing from wall to wall the Tories will carry on in disarray. To where or what noone knows at present.

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) in England and Wales was announced by the British Home Secretary, Theresa May, on 7 July 2014. The inquiry was established to examine how the country's institutions handled their duty of care to protect children from sexual abuse.

It was set up after investigations in 2012 and 2013 into the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal revealed widespread abuse, including claims of abuse stretching back over decades by prominent media and political figures, and inadequate safeguarding by institutions and organisations responsible for child welfare.

So far 3 chairs have stepped down now some might say that, that's a bit unusual?

Materials found at National ArchivesIn January 2015, an academic researcher found in The National Archives a reference to a file regarding allegations of "unnatural" sexual behaviour taking place at Westminster that probably went to the Prime Minister in the early 1980s. The file was entitled "Allegations against former public [missing word] of unnatural sexual proclivities; security aspects 1980 Oct 27 - 1981 Mar 20." The file remains classified as it contained information from the security services and Law Officers. The Cabinet Office stated that any pertinent files would be made available to the forthcoming Independent Panel Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

Scope

Justice Goddard announced on 27 November 2015 that 12 separate investigations would be undertaken. These would cover:^[9]

• Children in the care of Lambeth Council
• Children in the care of Nottinghamshire councils
• Cambridge House, Knowl View and Rochdale Council
• Child sexual abuse in the Anglican Church
• Child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church
• The sexual abuse of children in custodial institutions
• Child sexual abuse in residential schools
• The internet and child sexual abuse
• Child exploitation by organised networks
• The protection of children outside the United Kingdom
• Accountability and reparations for victims and survivors
• Allegations of child sexual abuse linked to Westminster

She said that the scale of the inquiry was unprecedented, and that it would take five years, but she was determined that it would succeed. She added that all the investigations would start immediately, and that most if not all would include public hearings.

"I was taken to one side and it was made clear to me, I was told that Theresa May was going to be the Prime Minister, this inquiry was going to be part of this, and that if I didn't toe the line and do I was told, if I tried to get information out, I would be discredited by her advisors."

Evans also claimed that, when talking to the Home Affairs Select Committee, she was given a 23-page document of what she should say and told then-chair Keith Vaz "I fear that I may not be able to tell the truth because I have been told what I may and may not say."  

Although Evans and her colleagues were promised the inquiry would be independent, she told John "there was no independence" and the confidentiality clause imposed on all panel members facilitated the "suppression" of the truth.
When asked who wanted to suppress the information, she said "my belief is that it was the Home Office."

FACTS

1. Capital Group is the largest share holder in BAE
2. Phillip May works for Capital Group
3. Storm Shadow missiles cost around £750,000 each
4. Apparently 8 Storm shadow missiles were fired by the UK
5. 8 x £750,000 = £6,000,000

Yes... is the answer, the meme is factual

"The British jets fired a total of eight Storm Shadow missiles, Pentagon officials said."

"The missiles, produced by UK arms manufacturer BAE Systems, cost £790,000 each, coming to a total of £6.32 million. 900 of the missiles were purchased in 1997."

Its worth noting that the missiles are currently subject to a refurbishment project.



QUESTIONS I have to ask are...

1. May authorised an attack against another country that was no threat to the UK without going through Parliament. Why?
2. She could have done it knowing the share price would rise?
3. Did May discuss or mention the scheduled attack with husband?
4. If she did, did Husband have the opportunity to mention that to others in his company?
5. Were there any large share dealings prior to attack?
6. Were there any large share sales after the price rise?

I admit all of the above are unlikely but that fact remains that there are means and opportunity and that shouldn't be the case.  May could have negated any accusations by rubber stamping the attack in Parliament.

Conservative Chaos

At the last election David (I wont resign) Cameron mentioned this time and time again....

"Britain faces a simple and inescapable choice - stability and strong Government with me, or chaos with Ed Miliband" 

He was duly voted in having mislead the British Public about the Global banking crash and many other things. But that is the form these days lie and mislead to get in power at all costs.

Lets have a look at the years following the 2015 election...

• The Tory's carried on blindly with the failed Austerity policy.
• The Tories managed to increase the UKs debt even more after 2015.
• Cameron instigated a referendum that could be carried by one vote thereby splitting the UK.
• Cameron resigned after saying he wouldn't.
• May called an election after saying many times she wouldn't because Britain needed stability.
• The pound hit a 31 year low.
• Under the Tories the housing crisis deepened.
• The Tories were forced into a U Turn and have abandoned their plan of forced academisation.
• Jeremy Hunt failure to negotiate with Junior Doctors.
• Evidence continues to show that it is women who have been hit hardest by Tory austerity.

So where is the Tories history of Stability?

Where is the history of strong government?

With U Turn after U Turn, failed promises, misleading statements. There is certainly no stability or strength.

May is yet again regurgitating a similar line ...

Your choice at this election: strong, stable leadership in the national interest or a coalition of #chaos with Jeremy Corbyn. (Baring in mind that both Labour and the Lib Dems have stated that there will be no coalition.)

The problem with the statement is it is incongruent with their actions.

May called an election after saying many times that it wasn't in the interests of the UK. She is refusing to engage in TV debates, avoiding contact with voters with staged meetings with only the Tory faithful invited and visits to Companies where the workers have all gone home.

This isn't someone who's strong, and calling an election after saying it wasn't in the interests of Britain is certainly not stable.

So do we have stability under the Tories ... NO
Do we have strength under the Tories ....NO

Please explain to me how someone who cannot work without a script is supposed to negotiate trade deals with world leaders.

The one thing Tories are good at is belittling statements and misleading information. 

What we really have experienced since 2010 is Conservative Chaos.  There is no other way to describe it.

A Historic Day - "Remains" To Be Seen

I’m a neutral on Brexit… admittedly I voted remain after doing  a lot of research and seeing through the misinformation of the Brexit campaign. But I always wanted to leave,  just didn’t think it was going to improve things. To be honest if the Brexit campaign hadn’t employed misinformation I may have voted to leave.  However the vote is out…. albeit by a tiny majority, so let’s get on with it.   

My problem is still that I don’t trust the Tories to get a good deal for the majority of people. The way they ran the referendum was a shambles and has split the country, not brought it together. 

 I was bemused by what I was hearing on the radio today, so called “Brexiters” claiming that so called “Remainers” would be the cause of Britain not getting a good deal on leaving the EU ……. Really …come on REALLY!  Let not start trying to put the blame off on others before we even start or is the confident bravado waning now?

This has to stop we are going into no man’s land, we may end up better off, we may end up worse off. No one knows because it’s not been done before. It’s a coin flip and anyone who tells you different is just guessing. The more those that voted to leave keep name calling with “Remainer’s” “Remoaner’s” Etc the more the country will be divided.  

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. People who vote Tory don’t suddenly become labour supporters when Labour gets voted in, no they still have their ideal's and opinion’s and carry on arguing their point of view.

The beauty of this country is its still one of the most democratic countries in the world, regardless what we think of our politicians.  The only thing both camps should be doing now is scrutinising what deal this government is going to get for the Majority ….. I aint holding my breath.

One thing im sure of this wont just take 2 years.  We may leave the EU in 2 years but we will be sorting this out for 10 years plus.

In my opinion it will be 20 years before we've finished dealing with Brexit fallout.  The UKs ambassador thinks it could take 10 years to get a trade deal sorted out. Theresa May however hasn't got a clue and successfully answers every question that wasn't asked and avoids the one that was asked.
