Nigel Farage: The Man Who Sold Britain Brexit and Now Wants to Sell the NHS

Nigel Farage: The Professional Outsider Who Keeps Cashing In

Nigel Farage has built an entire political career pretending to be the bloke in the pub standing up for ordinary people. The reality is rather different.

For nearly three decades, Farage has managed to position himself as the anti-establishment rebel while spending most of his career inside politics, media, wealthy donor circles and billionaire-funded campaigns.

He presents himself as a patriot. Yet some of his closest political relationships and public statements repeatedly raise serious questions about whose interests he actually serves.

Not conspiracy theories. Not internet nonsense. His own words. His own actions. His own donors.

The NHS Question: Farage’s Own Words

Farage and Reform UK now insist they support healthcare being “free at the point of use”. But that carefully chosen phrase avoids the real issue: how healthcare is funded.

Because Farage has repeatedly argued against the NHS being funded through general taxation.

In 2012 he said:

I think we’re going to have to move to an insurance-based system of healthcare.

In 2025 he again said he was “open to anything” regarding an insurance-based NHS model.

He has also said:

“I do not want it funded through general taxation. It does not work.”

That matters because once you move away from taxation funding, you fundamentally change what the NHS is.

Farage supporters claim he means a European insurance model like France or Germany. Critics fear it becomes a slippery slope toward something far closer to the nightmare healthcare mess of the United States.

Either way, it is simply dishonest to pretend he has never advocated major structural NHS change. The quotes exist. On camera.

Brexit: The Most Expensive Political Sales Pitch in Modern British History

Farage still behaves as though Brexit was an unqualified triumph betrayed by others.

Yet study after study has found Brexit damaged UK trade, reduced investment growth and weakened productivity. Even the Office for Budget Responsibility estimated long-term UK productivity would be roughly 4% lower than if Britain had remained in the EU.

The promises sold during the referendum now look painfully familiar:

  • Easier trade
  • Economic boom
  • Reduced bureaucracy
  • Huge NHS savings
  • Minimal disruption

Instead, Britain got years of instability, trade friction, labour shortages, soaring bureaucracy for exporters and stagnant growth.

And Farage? He simply moved on to the next outrage cycle.

That is the trick with career populists. The mess is never their fault. The answer is always more populism.

Trump: Farage the Cheerleader

Farage’s relationship with Donald Trump goes far beyond ordinary political alignment.

He has repeatedly travelled to the US to campaign alongside Trump, appearing at rallies and praising him in terms that would embarrass a North Korean state broadcaster.

At an Arizona rally in 2020, Farage called Trump:

the most resilient and bravest person I've ever met in my life.

This despite:

  • Trump’s repeated false election claims
  • the January 6 Capitol attack aftermath
  • endless misinformation
  • multiple criminal indictments
  • documented false statements numbering in the tens of thousands according to major fact-checking databases

Farage consistently positioned himself not as a cautious ally, but as one of Trump’s loudest UK amplifiers.

It increasingly looked less like diplomacy and more like political fan fiction.

Putin, Russia and “Provocation”

Farage has spent years trying to walk a careful line on Russia.

He has criticised Putin at times. But he has also repeatedly echoed Kremlin-friendly talking points.

Most controversially, he said the EU and NATO had “provoked” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine through eastern expansion.

He previously said Putin was the world leader he most admired “as an operator”.

Critics from multiple parties accused him of parroting Kremlin narratives.

Now, to be fair, saying NATO expansion contributed to tensions is not itself a uniquely pro-Russian position. Some academics and foreign policy analysts have argued similar points.

But Farage’s habit of consistently sounding softer on Putin than on Britain’s European allies has long alarmed critics.

Especially combined with his closeness to Trump, whose own Russia-related conduct has faced years of scrutiny.

The Billionaire Problem

Farage sells himself as anti-elite.

Yet wealthy donors seem to follow him around like seagulls after chips.

Recent reporting revealed Farage received a £5 million undeclared gift from crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne before reversing his decision not to stand in the 2024 election.

Harborne has donated millions more to Reform-linked political causes over the years.

Questions naturally follow:

  • Why do ultra-wealthy individuals invest so heavily in supposedly anti-establishment populists?
  • What policies are they expecting in return?
  • Why do “ordinary working people” movements keep ending up financed by hedge-fund types, crypto billionaires and tax-averse elites?

Farage’s politics often sounds anti-elite.

His funding frequently does not.

The Eternal Outsider Routine

Perhaps the cleverest thing Farage ever achieved was convincing millions he was outside the system while making a living entirely from the system.

MEP salary.
Media contracts.
GB News.
Speaking tours.
Political donations.
Campaign companies.
Public appearances.
American conservative circuits.

All while portraying himself as the only man willing to “tell the truth”.

The reality is simpler:
Farage is extraordinarily good at branding.

He identifies public anger early.
He amplifies it.
He monetises it.
Then, when reality catches up, he pivots to the next grievance.

Brexit.
Immigration.
Net Zero.
The NHS.
Trump.
Culture wars.

Always outrage.
Always somebody else to blame.
Always another performance.

Gary’s Soapbox Comment

Farage’s real talent is not leadership. It’s salesmanship.

He sells frustration back to frustrated people while presenting himself as the bloke fighting “the elite”, despite spending years orbiting billionaires, media moguls and wealthy political donors.

The NHS comments matter because they expose the pattern. Say something extreme. Deny meaning exactly what everyone heard. Then accuse critics of twisting your words while quietly repeating the same argument in softer language later. That is straight out of the Donald Trump playbook.

Any politician who fawns over Donald Trump the way Farage does is either a shill or standing at the end of somebody else’s puppet strings.

Britain already bought one Farage project on promises and slogans. The invoice is still arriving.

Boris Johnson's economy lies

Why do we hark back to distant times which have no bearing on the now? The main point is Johnson is a lying b'stard always was always will be.

We were/are told the UK is outperforming everyone in Europe, which is clearly a lie.

When comparing inflation over the last 12 months, the UK’s rate has proportionally grown more than all but Spain, Belgium and Ireland.

And if you compare the current rate with our closest neighbours, the UK’s CPI is at the upper end of the scale.

However, it is not as extreme as Spain (6.1%), the Netherlands (6.4%) or Belgium (7.59%) and only sits 0.2% above the EU average.

When you take into account the direction of travel of inflation rates, a more nuanced picture emerges.
UK prices grew 0.1% in January 2022 compared to December 2021, which was in line with the EU average.

The real picture is we are a little above the EU average. Not doing better than all of Europe.

It matters not now, that inflation was whatever when Labour was in power when arguing this particular point.

Same as it doesn't matter that Thatcher created the biggest unemployed totals and would have been voted out if it wasn't for the Falklands. Very opportune that but another argument.

Or that they have continuously created more debt in the UK every time they are in power, in fact, creating more debt than every other government combined since 1901.

It doesn't matter that the NHS was created on Labours watch, a service so incredible and game-changing that the Tories now try to claim to be proponents of and a service that no doubt everyone on here has at some time used and saved thousands in doing so.

The fact that they increased the UK debt by over 850 billion, during the worst austerity since the war and whilst claiming the UK was bankrupt, and they were able to give away 94 billion in tax concession to big corporations, who had neither asked or expected it, should be a wake-up call for everyone who has even a modicum of intelligence.

The problem is the continuous lies more than by any other politician in UK history.

COVID ~ Did the UK run out of PPE during the 1st wave of Covid

Just going by the parliamentary public spending watchdog report the answer has to be YES!

Why would any Government go out and source substandard quality PPE if we had enough?

May 1 2020

The tweets were terse and, to the uninitiated, obscure. “Gowns” — “examination gloves” — “green aprons” — read the messages from the accounts of procurement leaders in the UK’s National Health Service. But to their colleagues in other hospitals, each represented a cry for help, signalling shortfalls of key items of personal protective equipment (PPE) needed to keep clinicians safe while they fought a once-in-a-century battle against coronavirus.

November 25, 2020

Today’s report by the National Audit Office (NAO) finds that government was initially reliant on stockpiles of personal protective equipment (PPE) that proved inadequate for the COVID-19 pandemic. In a rapidly deteriorating situation government made a huge effort to boost supply, but it has paid very high prices due to unusual market conditions and many front-line workers reported shortages of PPE.
10 February 2021

The UK government wasted hundreds of millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money on poor quality and unusable personal protective equipment (PPE) while leaving frontline workers insufficiently protected from covid-19, the parliamentary public spending watchdog has concluded.

COVID-19 ~ Sorry Boris Your Not Fooling Me

Let's say this before continuing. I don't wish Corronavirus on anyone and I wish Boris Johnson a speedy recovery, however.....

Just because you catch Coronavirus and end up in ICU doesn't wipe the slate clean.

Yes I hope Boris gets better. But let's not forget. Yes, he did clap for the NHS at 8pm, he was also there clapping and cheering when they voted down a pay rise for NHS workers who are drastically underpaid for the work they do.  Voting against the pay rise is one thing but cheering? That tells you a lot about the people that voted it down.

Supported the UK? well, that's a moot point. He's switched sides and done everything possible including Lying, (in fact, he's a pathological liar), misleading, insulting anything he could just to get into No10.  I call that self-serving not supporting the UK.

He voted against Mays deal and then claimed to negotiate a better deal which handed the EU what they wanted in the 1st place, a border down the Irish sea and then claimed he'd got a better deal and everyone thought he was a god. It's unbelievable, I mean It literally beggars belief.

WAKE UP PEOPLE YOU'RE BEING CONNED!!

He was possibly the most incompetent Foreign Secretary the UK has ever had and if he hadn't jumped would have probably been sacked. There's a UK citizen still in an Iran jail because of his stupid comments.

He was sacked twice before for lying, misleading information.

For years the Tories have been quietly privatising the NHS, you only have to talk to NHS workers to understand that. But now they claim they are champions of the NHS, because they know its a vote winner.

We have one of the lowest numbers of hospital beds in Europe, so we are already on the back foot in regards to Coronavirus. In the past 10 years, the Tories have reduced the number of hospital beds by over 12,000. 14,000 depending on which stats you use, I'll use the lower.

We also have one of the lowest levels of ventilators in Europe.  We are the 6th richest country in the world, we should not be one of the lowest!!!!

Look around you everything is falling apart, holes in the roads, etc etc the list is endless. 10 years of Tory austerity we've had so many cuts, clubs for kids axed so their all out on the streets now. Police numbers cut, Firefighters cut, nurses cut, social support cut, etc etc

And they are claiming to be heroes for just putting back what they cut in the 1st place. We are over 800 billion more in debt than in 2010 and the debt/fall out from the worldwide banking crash was levelling off at that point.  The Tories brought in austerity and lost our AAA rating. Which we still haven't got back and they were warned that would happen if they carried on on the path that they were going down.  800 billion more in debt, where did the money go?  No one seems to ask that.

I for one am not fooled, I'm not taken in by the charming Buffon pathological Liar, I'm not fooled by the we are champions of the NHS statements.

I'll say it again the Tories clapped and cheered when voting down a pay rise for NHS workers who are vastly underpaid for what they do and they have the audacity to try and win votes by applauding the NHS now.... when they are expecting them to die. Expecting them to put their lives on the line to save people, to save Mr Johnson. For the same pay......For the same pay!!

They say all politicians lie, well maybe they do, but they should not be allowed to and this current government takes it to a whole new level, we've never seen anything like it before and they are getting away with it.
“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
I will be clapping the NHS workers for putting their lives on the line to treat you and thousands of others, battling to stay alive.

Boris Johnson, I wish you no ill, I hope you recover and if you do you'll probably come out of this a national hero.

BUT YOU'RE NOT FOOLING ME!!   Not one little bit.

Covid-19 ~ The UK response is A National Scandal

Offline: COVID-19 and the NHS—“a national scandal”

“When this is all over, the NHS England board should resign in their entirety.” So wrote one National Health Service (NHS) health worker last weekend. The scale of anger and frustration is unprecedented, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is the cause. The UK Government's Contain–Delay–Mitigate–Research strategy failed. It failed, in part, because ministers didn't follow WHO's advice to “test, test, test” every suspected case. They didn't isolate and quarantine. They didn't contact trace. These basic principles of public health and infectious disease control were ignored, for reasons that remain opaque. The UK now has a new plan—Suppress–Shield–Treat–Palliate. But this plan, agreed far too late in the course of the outbreak, has left the NHS wholly unprepared for the surge of severely and critically ill patients that will soon come.

                                                          oooOOooo

The NHS has been wholly unprepared for this pandemic. It's impossible to understand why. Based on their modelling of the Wuhan outbreak of COVID-19, Joseph Wu and his colleagues wrote in The Lancet on Jan 31, 2020: “On the present trajectory, 2019-nCoV could be about to become a global epidemic…for health protection within China and internationally…preparedness plans should be readied for deployment at short notice, including securing supply chains of pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment, hospital supplies, and the necessary human resources to deal with the consequences of a global outbreak of this magnitude.”
This warning wasn't made lightly. It should have been read by the Chief Medical Officer, the Chief Executive Officer of the NHS in England, and the Chief Scientific Adviser. They had a duty to immediately put the NHS and British public on high alert. February should have been used to expand coronavirus testing capacity, ensure the distribution of WHO-approved PPE, and establish training programmes and guidelines to protect NHS staff. They didn't take any of those actions. The result has been chaos and panic across the NHS. Patients will die unnecessarily. NHS staff will die unnecessarily. It is, indeed, as one health worker wrote last week, “a national scandal”. The gravity of that scandal has yet to be understood.

Boris Johnson's car crash head to head with Jeremy Corbyn

Corbyn played a mastercard and I didnt realise how much of a mastercard at the time.  That came to light later.

After the leader election debate between Corbyn and Johnson I was of the opinion that it was a bit of a draw with noone coming out on top, however events that came to light after that changed my opinion.

During the debate Corbyn waved a freedom of information document around on negotiations between the Tories and the US which had been heavily redacted (for redacted read censored).

“Every single line of this document, redacted out. A document here, of US-UK negotiations. Summary of specific negotiating objectives: full market access for US products to our National Health Service. You’re going to sell out our NHS to the United States and big pharma.”  ~ Jeremy Corbyn

Now here's why I now feel that it was a car crash for BloJo......

  1. The Tories obviously had the rebranded twitter account ready to go live if they got hit with something that they couldn't counter and this was it.
  2. Soon after Corbyn made that statement the rebranded FAKE factcheck branding was put up on the twitter account trying to claim Corbyn was the liar to cover the impact of the documents.
  3. If the document was not factual why didn't the Tories mentioned it afterwards. They never claimed the document was fake. They never claimed it was incorrect.
  4. It was so important they were prepared to risk having their twitter account suspended by contravening twitter's rules.
  5. Every Tory i've seen interviewed since claimed they did it to exposed Corbyn lies, never mentioning the document.
  6. The fact that they havnt claimed the document is a pack of lies is telling.  If the document was incorrect or fake BloJo could have easily said so in front of millions of people.  He didn't, all he could do was bluster his way through it and continue with the Tory mantra that the NHS is not for sale which now people can see is the biggest lie of the lot.
  7. Since then BloJo has pulled out of a 2nd head to head debate scheduled on channel 4 as they obviously know its going to get mentioned again and they cant counter it because the document is factual.
  8. Regardless what the Tories claim the NHS has been being sold off to private companies for years. It's just done stealthily with Virgin Care one of the biggest health care providers.

Pollster YouGov found Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn were roughly neck-and-neck in the contest, with 51 per cent of the audience saying the Tory leader won and 49 per cent saying the Labour leader. But among undecided voters Mr Corbyn was judged to have won a decisive victory, with a 59-41 per cent lead over Boris Johnson as best performer among that group.
